Sweet Life
Oct/Nov 2008
It's immediately apparent—from the song titles,
the watercolor hues of the album cover and its
photo of an obviously animated Curtis—that Sweet Life is an ode to
affirmation, a clear antidote for troubled times. "When the world is
dark, I know it breaks your heart / But maybe some small thing you've
done / Means the world to someone," she suggests with "What You
Can't Believe," a clarion call for positive, proactive thinking. The
melodies radiate these sunny sentiments, from the easy, winsome
appeal of the title track and the assertive spunk of "Happy" to the
sensual shuffle of "Sing" and a cover of Death Cab for Cutie's "Soul
Meets Body." Curtis' day-glo musings are often etched with nostalgia—
the radiance infusing "Are You Ready to Fly?" being a prime example—
but her allure and assurance make this Sweet Life that much more
appealing. —LZ
