Hi Friends,
Times are tough. Here's some news to distract you!
1) I'm playing a band gig in Amesbury MA on 4/12 https://www.eventbrite.com/e/catie-curtis-live-at-the-space-tickets-1228399749719
2) I'm playing the Word Barn in Exeter NH on 5/4 https://www.thewordbarn.com/events/05/04/2025/catie-curtis
3) I'm turning 60 and to celebrate I'm raising money for Project Somos! https://projectsomos.org/?form=FUNGABTKDYL&fundraiser=NDKGQAKQ&amount=60&member=SRTBUHDZ&recurring=once
About that band gig... I haven't played with bass and drums A.K.A a full band since 2001, when I toured with my My Shirt Looks Good on You CD. The first couple of gigs got cancelled after 9/11 happened, but we jumped back in to the itineray at the Bottom Line in NYC a couple weeks later and it was an unforgettable tour. Since then, I generally perform solo or as a duo. I have missed playing with a band, but it just wasn't practical logistically or financially. You would think that I would have had the bandwidth for musical collaboration when I was playing music full-time for 25 years. But the truth is, I was working so hard to make a living and raise my kids that I had to keep things simple and streamlined, solo, or duo.
Last year, a couple years after all four of our kids graduated from high school, my wife and I moved up to the Newburyport area. I now work in private practice as a therapist, and I also play 8-10 shows a year within an hour or two of my home. A couple month ago, I dropped by Zach Field Drums and Music (locations in Newburyport and Amesbury, MA) to meet with Zach, who has an impeccable reputation as an amazing musician and a fantastic human. I was asking him a pretty basic question-- what would make the musicians you know want to jam with a singer/songwriter and play her songs? As we talked, we came up with this idea to do a band gig. Fun, right? AND IT'S HAPPENING on April 12th in the black box theater at Zach Field Drums. He helped me put the band together and I'm having a blast rehearsing with him and them! https://www.eventbrite.com/e/catie-curtis-live-at-the-space-tickets-1228399749719
Another wish list item that came through recently is a gig at the Word Barn in Exeter, NH. It's such a special place, run by amazing folks. I look forward to the show on 5/4! https://www.thewordbarn.com/events/05/04/2025/catie-curtis
And finally, in anticipation of my 60th birthday, I set a goal of raising $3600 (60 gifts of $60) for Project Somos, a children's learning village in Guatemala. I've been there myself with my 20 year old daughter for several week-long volunteer trips over the past few years, and can vouch for the powerful impact of this effective non-profit on the local community. Join me in supporting them here: https://projectsomos.org/?form=FUNGABTKDYL&fundraiser=NDKGQAKQ&amount=60&member=SRTBUHDZ&recurring=once
Clearly, this is a time to to stand up and let your voice be heard. Here's a place to go if you are distressed by the current leadership: https://indivisible.org/. Check out the event on April 5th!
It's also important to find ways to have fun and stay calm and centered. I listen to www.wumb.org radio, I watch women's hoops, I'm playing music at home as much as I can.
Take good care, ya'll!
Catie
